Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks following Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The team went 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
